These factories are called paper mills. As for the materials used, raw materials such as wood pulp and plant fibers are one of them. So basically, the paper that we are using right now actually comes from nature. The pulp and paper industry does not only help produce paper for our daily use in different purposes, but it actually also contributes to the economy of a country.

The Pulp and Paper Industry


The U.S. paper industry leads the world with over 24 percent of global paper production capacity (American Forest and Paper Association, 1998a). It produces 9 million tons of pulp each year (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 1997a). The pulp and paper industry is the most capital intensive in the United States, spending approximately $130,000 per employee each year in plant and equipment. Economies of scale thus are critical to profitability. Pulp and paper mills produce up to 5,000 tons of paper per day to satisfy a national consumption rate of 700 pounds per American per year, double the consumption in 19601 (Blum et al., 1997).

Paper and paperboard products are made from pulp. Pulp is made predominately from wood, but in many cases it is made from other plant fibers such as cotton, linen, and hemp and grasses such as straw, wheat, and kenaf. More recently, recycled paper has become a common material input. In 1996, American paper mills recovered 44.8 percent of postconsumer U.S. paper, and the industry has set a 50 percent paper recovery goal by the year 2000 (American Forest and Paper Association, 1998b).

Paper is made from raw materials like trees and other plants and it has already raised a concern from the NGOs and other people. I hope that the issue will be resolved and that the companies operating the pulp and paper industry would think of a possible solution to this. Magna disrupts paper industry with ‘mineral stone paper’

FOR most of us, paper comes from trees. But for chemical research and development firm Magna International, paper can also be a combination of natural chemical compounds.

Known officially as the Vappro 830 Vapor Corrosion Inhibiting (VCI) Mineral Stone Paper, the paper is made of chemicals such as calcium carbonate and silica powder, materials that are in abundance in the natural environment.

Though stone paper is nothing new, Magna’s innovation takes the paper a level higher. The infusion of vapor corrosion-inhibiting chemicals increases the paper’s durability and shelf life, ultimately saving the environment.

Magna founder and chief executive Nelson Cheng labels the new innovation as “disruptive technology”, as he believes that in the next two to three years, it will change the way paper is conventionally manufactured. Magna has already patented the product in Singapore and in some other countries, including Sweden. Read more here.

As we have mentioned earlier, paper is made from raw materials such as trees and other plants. However, experts have found another material, a chemical rather, which could be used in making paper. Some of these are calcium carbonate and silica powder. These chemicals could be a possible substitute for trees and plants. However, experts should also make sure that these chemicals are harmless and safe. In the pulp and paper industry, we should think of conserving the nature and keeping the humans safe as well.
